On May 17th, NBA teams found out the destination of Victor Wembanyama, the 7 ft 4 French prodigy on par with the hype of a highschooler LeBron James. The San Antonio Spurs won the rights to draft Wembanyama but the most intriguing team coming out of the lottery, is the Orlando Magic.
With the 6th best odds to get the prized number 1 overall pick, Magic fans were filled with optimism in pairing near unanimous rookie of the year, Paolo Banchero with Wembanyama but luck was not in their favour. The Magic ended with pick 6 and 11 and now have a difficult decision on their hands. A team that has struggled with mediocrity since the Dwight Howards years, Orlando have one of the most promising teams ahead of the upcoming NBA season. The question now begins on whether or not the 6th and 11th pick should be traded or try to develop another 2 young players.
At the 6th pick, Magic are looking at Ausar Thompson, Cam Whitmore or even a Gradey Dick to draft. This young Orlando team needs 3pt shooting with them shooting the 8th least amount of 3pt field goals and making the 7th worst amount of threes, 3point shooting is an area needed to be improved. Jalen Suggs, the former 5th pick, heavily improved as a 3point shooter this year comparing to his abysmal 21% in his rookie year but Suggs is not the 3 and D player needed for the Magic to thoroughly improve.
But what should the Magic do? There is not many players on the market right now, but many different sources believe this off-season will shock the world with the new rules implemented at the end of the 2023-24 season. What is actually on the market?
Bill Simmons, a renowned sports writer suggested a trade for Damian Lillard on his podcast. His co-hosts were not the biggest fans but believe that could be the move as Lillard is unhappy with Portland wasting his prime trying to win the lottery. This may seem a fair bit progressive, but just as of just last year many sports writers believed the magic should have been in the Donovan Mitchell sweepstakes. Even this season there were rumours the Magic would be interested in trading for Trae Young.
In the NBA world everyone thinks the Orlando front office will make the wrong decision because of previous questionable decisions in old regimes. But this Front Office has done nothing to break trust with Magic fans after getting Markelle Fultz for an end of rotation player and the Vucevic Heist that is still costing the Bulls this season. Whatever Orlando decide to do with their bounty of picks Magic fans should believe in what the Front Office is doing. Do not forget Jeff Weltman and John Hammond were the front office to draft Giannis Antetokounmpo so understand the decision they make.
