The fall of the Twin Towers to 50 Shades of Grey Pipeline

9/11 had more consequences than just the tightening of security at airports. It also inspired Gerard Way to form My Chemical Romance, one of greatest emo bands of the 2000s. He felt he needed a way to express how messed up America was and still is. As a band they released 4 full length albums, but it was their third, The Black Parade, that inspired the Twilight trilogy.

Stephanie Myers is the author of the hit series Twilight. The first book was released in 2005 and the film in 2008. One of the main characters in all 3 books is Jacob Black, who was directly inspired by the angsty lyrics of MCR’s song Famous Last Words.

In 2009 E.L. James started writing 50 Shades Of Grey after becoming obsessed with Twilight. It was originally titled Master Of Universe and released on fanfiction.net under James’s pseudonym Snowdragon Icequeen. The book was an erotic fanfiction of Twilight, based on the two main characters Edward Cullen and Bella Swan. In 2012 she took it down, officially published it and it is now the most commercially successful erotic literature.

And there you have it, in 10 short years the consequences of 9/11 leading to the most well-known erotic literature.
